OnePlus is the latest smartphone maker to jump on the AI image editing bandwagon with its new ‘AI Eraser’ feature. Powered by the company’s “proprietary large language model,” AI Eraser lets you zap unwanted objects right out of your photos with a few taps.
The feature is slated to start rolling out sometime in April to select OnePlus devices including the OnePlus 12, 12R, 11, Open, and Nord CE 4. It’s unclear if it’ll arrive via a system update or through the Photos app itself.
Once you fire up the feature in the Gallery, AI Eraser will let you highlight anything you want removed from a shot – random pedestrians or trash on the street. OnePlus’ AI model then takes a look and automatically generates a new background to replace the selected area. The replaced portion is meant to blend seamlessly with the rest of the image while preserving the overall style and feel.

OnePlus says its proprietary large language model was trained on a massive dataset to give it the smarts for understanding complex scenes. That visual intelligence supposedly allows AI Eraser to fill in the gaps left by removed objects with contextually fitting replacements that enhance rather than detract from the photo quality.
“AI Eraser is the result of a substantial R&D investment from OnePlus that has been undertaken with a commitment to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content,” OnePlus says.
The move sees OnePlus join the likes of Google and Samsung in offering AI-powered photo editing utilities. Google’s Magic Eraser does basically the same job on Pixel phones and via a Google One subscription, as does Samsung’s Galaxy AI.
OnePlus in its press release has hinted that more features are on the way by throwing around the term “OnePlus AI.” With most other smartphone brands scrambling to add a dash of AI across their software skins, the company seems to be headed in that direction too, starting with this new eraser tool.
