WhatsApp testing new generative AI features powered by Meta’s Llama

Several users have started to receive Llama-powered generative AI features on WhatsApp. Currently rolling out randomly to a select number of users, the new generative AI features, powered by Llama, are introducing a Perplexity AI-like UI within WhatsApp.

WhatsApp’s new AI capability is available for select Android and iOS users, and users can access the same inside the app via the Meta AI chat, which says “Ask Meta AI anything.” This is not the first time Meta has introduced generative AI features on WhatsApp, as the company started testing AI-generated images on WhatsApp a few months ago, again, limited to select users.

WhatsApp also clearly states that “Meta may use the AI messages to improve AI quality”; however, “personal messages are never sent to Meta and are end-to-end encrypted.” And before starting to use Meta AI on WhatsApp, one needs to agree to Meta’s AI terms.

Like any other generative AI chatbot, users can ask questions to the Meta AI chatbot in a human-style conversation, and, on top of that, users can also generate images using text prompts within WhatsApp. To get started, there are a few predefined prompts, and users can click on these to begin the conversation with Meta AI.

The Llama-powered Meta AI’s UI on WhatsApp is almost identical to Perplexity AI, and Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has taken a dig at the same, stating “Honored and proud of our designers!”

Not just WhatsApp, Meta is also testing Llama-powered AI features on its photo and video-sharing platform Instagram, enabling users to generate captions and hashtags. On top of that, Instagram is also set to receive an AI-powered chatbot in the coming days.
